Appealing and expressive on the nose.

Dried strawberries and crimson plums, developing some more savoury layers of spices and cedar wood. With long yet velvety tannins, this wine shows both integrity and complexity.

  • James Suckling

"Attractive, juicy fruit with finesse and focus on the nose and palate. Strawberries and flowers. Medium body, crisp acidity and a delicious finish. Drink now.""

  • Sam Kim

"It’s gorgeously expressed on the nose, showing dark berry, dried mushroom, thyme, and warm spice aromas, leading to a wonderfully weighted palate offering velvety texture, backed by fine-grained tannins, finishing impressively long and savoury. It’s weighty and plump with elegance and finesse. At its best now to 2030.""

The 2016 Needle’s Eye is a representation of all clones and soil profiles on the vineyard taken from the original 3 pinot blocks. The elevated blocks lie on undisturbed clay soils overlying greywacke parent rock, while lower blocks are planted on wind-deposited, loess soils. Vine age is approx 14 years.

While the 2016 is not organic certified, the vineyard had been farmed organically since 2012. It was a great vintage due to warm, dry and consistent conditions.

    Soil

Elevated blocks of clay loam, and loess soil on lower slopes. Predominantly north facing.

    Viticulture

No pesticides, herbicides, systemic fungicides or inorganic fertiliser used. Clones include 667, 777, UCD5, UCD6, 114, 115, Abel, AM 10/5.

100% wild fermentation. 5% whole bunch. 14-16 days on skins. No additives other than sulphites.
