The Wrekin is a family-owned and operated certified organic vineyard and winery nestled in the foothills of Marlborough’s Southern Valleys.

Our focus is on our dedicated team, biodynamic viticulture and the provenance of our wines. We hand-harvest and basket press small parcels of single-estate pinot noir, chardonnay and chenin blanc wines.

Looking back over the Chenin Blanc blocks during winter pruning

Single estate, organic certified wines

Andrew and Jan Johns purchased The Wrekin in 1998 as a sheep and beef farm, planting the first vines in 2002. From the 17 hectare vineyard, we produce mostly pinot noir with smaller quantities of chardonnay and chenin blanc grapes.

Together with vigneron Jeremy Hyland and winemaker Hätsch Kalberer, we endeavour to produce wines that best represent the unique qualities of our vineyard produced by organic and biodynamic practices.

The recent construction of our on-site gravity-flow winery means fruit is grown, crafted into wine and aged without leaving the farm.

The Vineyard

A small, passionate team

Andrew & Jan, Anna & Andy live on the farm, but it's the team behind them that make The Wrekin a truly special place.

Every vintage begins with Jeremy leading a small team pruning the vines in the cold winter months, taking care to respect sap flow and longevity of our 20+ year old vines. Throughout the year we apply soil-enriching biodynamic preparations prepared on specific days with help from the local BD community.

In summer our team expands to include young travelling wine-lovers, locals and friends who hand-harvest all blocks in the vineyard over a 30+ day period. Through the year we enjoy coming together for dinners and events to celebrate milestones, birthdays and biodynamic days.
