Causing a stir at The Wrekin
Sophie Preece – New Zealand Winegrower –
Our (relatively new) on-site winery now processes grapes adjacent to where they are grown. This setup helps preserve the unique characteristics of the biodynamically farmed land and improves flexibility in production.
Despite delays in equipment delivery, the winery managed to begin operations in time for the 2022 harvest, processing a modest seven tonnes of fruit. The facility is intentionally simple and environmentally conscious, using practices like composting grape waste and recycling wastewater on the land, while minimising transport needs.
The winery also enhances the connection between workers and the winemaking process, allowing them to follow the fruit from vine to bottle in a hands-on, traditional style.
